Singer-Songwriter

Picture
The 1960's proved to be an exciting time in musical history. Already at an early age I was exposed to the new beat of the Beatles while living for a short time in Ireland. At age fourteen, after learning piano, recorder and flute, I took up the guitar which quickly became my instrument of choice! I spent hours with my vinyl LP's learning the beautiful finger styles of James Taylor and Paul Simon. I was in awe of the perfect synchronicity of Peter, Paul & Mary and of how Bob Dylan could inspire the masses with his complex yet simplistic musical social commentary. Then came the exquisite vocal harmonies and creative acoustic meanderings of Crosby, Stills & Nash that held me spellbound while the open chord tunings of Joni Mitchell and Mary McCaslin enchanted me. The 1970's blew in like a storm. My pure folk soul was challenged and sparked by the free flying energy of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire . The feminist movement brought amazing women songwriters to the forefront. Cris Williamson, Meg Christian, Wendy Waldman, Bonnie Raitt, Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith, Hazel and Alice, and more recently the Indigo Girls proved to be important role models for my budding young artist! In the mid 1970’s I took to the road and traveled through Canada and Europe and in 1976 ended up in Israel for 22 years! It was there that my musical ears became attuned to a diverse repertoire of traditional, world and roots music, as well as a myriad of Middle Eastern ancient and contemporary sounds, rhythms and genres. By the 1980’s I had mastered it all. That's when I wrote and performed my first original song and haven't stopped yet!

Time Passes By (review by Victoria Arico)

I am not afraid when life turns me around, sings Vintage Gold Muse in "Where I'm Bound", and that sentiment reflects the tone of this whole collection of songs. Many express a sense of wandering lost, yet there is an everpresent underlying courage and hope that the journey is purposeful and worthwhile despite the trials. The songs share a common spirit, as if the composer was on the cusp of a sad ending and a hopeful new beginning. I enjoyed the powerful harmonies and sparkling mandolin in "Time Passes By" and "Hey Love". I liked the unusual strumming pattern used to punctuate the beat in "Hey Love" - wow, what a song of joy! Clearly a woman of great faith, she can cover many emotional bases through the language of music alone. The beautiful chord progressions and quiet vocals in "Babylon" tenderly express hope rising out of sorrow. Vintage Gold Muse reminds me of Suzanne Vega in that she sounds like she's speaking in tones. I like the quiet softness in "Pierrot" (a lovely song) and the hard-drivin' style vocals and harmonies in "Straight in the Eye". "Golden sun, rainbow colored skies surround you as you go. Move forward arms open wide, you've nothing to do but grow": That's the joyful philosophy of life, in 3/4 time from "Whenever You're You". A gifted, soulful songwriter, Vintage Gold Muse has a lot to say, and she says it well with this beautiful, diverse, collection of songs.
